What kind of black stuff is on my bird house?

• The birdhouses are made from old roof shingles that were made from old fuel barrels after the war. In order to glue everything together and get it tight, they were coated with pitch. This is partly still available. However, never on a visible side and  of course not on the side on which the birdseed is served.
